Victim of its great size, Canada has seen the plane become a dominant mean of transport. A trip from Montreal to Vancouver takes 5 hours by plane, and this means the plane will always have its place. However, for shorter distances, the role of the plane is less obvious. A recent study of the Conference Board of Canada titled Sustainable Urban Transport: A Winning Startegy for Canada discusses the possibility of a high-speed train between Montreal and Toronto.
In Europe and in Japan, high-speed trains are well established. So why not in Canada? The two biggest Canadian cities could be reached in just over 2 hours with a high-speed train. The plane surely goes faster, but you need to get to the airport one hour in advance and the airports are not near the city centre. Basically, there would be no gain of time taking the plane. Moreover, the development of this transport link would be a structuring investment that would take into account the environment and the fight against Greenhouse gas.

If you decide to get a train... make sure you take the slightly slower designs of the German ICE train and not the TGV despite its speed... ahh, forget it, that's not going to happen because you speak FRENCH... darn! Well at least the Chinese want our German, high-quality, built-to-last transport products!
